Why We Lose Stuff

Are you a loser? I don't mean it the way that The Donald means it. I mean do you lose stuff?

It's nearly Easter and whilst kids are out hunting chocolate eggs in hedgerows unsettlingly at about the same height as a cocker spaniel's hind leg, I've been looking for my tape measure. My better half has that saying "A place for everything and everything in its place" which always helps loads when you've lost something. Oh and she's not perfect. The other day she lost her phone but rather than watch her turn over all of the sofa cushions I mindfully pointed out that it was in her blouse pocket literally right under nose. I am such a kind husband. Although I did helpfully point out that she was wearing her glasses in case she was looking for them too!

I was reading an interesting article recently in The New Yorker ( oh yes look at me the cosmopolitan man about town.) Anyway the article summarises the reasons we lose stuff are either because of a failure of attention or because we don't value the thing we lost highly enough. Now this second explanation doesn't cover why I have in the past walked every floor in a multi storey car park looking for my car. I value it greatly! So it's down to a lack of attention then....Well for me I think it's more a focus of attention on something else rather than lack of attention. If I'm using the table saw my focus is solely on keeping all of my fingers in one piece and where the tape measure is located is just not important until the blades stop rotating and I finish counting fingers.

By the way I found the tape measure. It's always in the last place you look...

So... Are you a loser? What have you lost?

Twowoo for now

Pete
